Looking for a little guidance. I found your site quite by accident. We (Caroline, Daisy and I) are considering a move to your area, i.e. Madrid. Daisy is a 14 lb Pekingese who, while vocal has little to say about this. She seems happy wherever her “father” is. It is, indeed, a one person very tough little dog. Now, the issues or questions.

I am a New York City boy by birth. Married a southern girl. We’ve no family to speak of here and really nothing that holds us. I would like this to be a last move; not to be seen as anything of a premonition or foreboding, I just don’t want to move again. In point of fact I expect to live a good long life.

My question(s) have to do with you; if you are residents. What drew you there, what keeps you there. What do you do? I have a good, albeit dated education. I am politically to the Right. Don’t support or want big government or their involvement in my life. Enough of that. Caroline is the “nice” one of the two. I am probably the more direct, if yoou will. Not rude or “New York” just what you hear is just about what I feel. Love dogs. In fact the more people I meet the more I feel confirmed in that affection! Hate parties, Caroline loves them. Is Madrid someplace I could be content? That’s all I guess. Santa Fe would be my “city fix” but Madrid would be home.

Any thoughts? Thank you, in advance.

I suggest find a rental, come out for a few months and see if you like small town life. You can use the rental as a stepping block to finding a larger home and discovering the beauty of northern New Mexico.

Wow, you fell that in love with Madrid from the website?!  I agree with the previous answer that you need to come and check it out before making that big of a move.  Madrid’s current population is 300-350 people.
Having been a ghost town for nearly 20 years, it was re-inhabited in the early 70’s. It is certainly an artist community with about 50 shops and galleries catering to the tourists. The people are often described as fiercely independent and free thinking.

Good for them! Not a thing wrong with independent and free thinking. It’s the people who “charge” you for it I can’t abide! Free is good.
Thank you for your thoughts. I didn’t come to this just from the website; looked at some property nearby and was really taken with the feeling of being apart but so close to a nice city like Santa Fe. I’m nutty but not that bad; town I grew up in was not more than 7000 people. 350 is good! Thank you grin
