Anna,
That sounds like a great idea, but is it even allowed? I’ve always wondered what the restrictions were on harvesting boulders. I imagine you have to do it from private land with permission from land owner of course. I’ve always seen the pcik-up trucks parked on the side of the roads in Albuquerque and Santa Fe selling boulders - wondered where they were getting them.
I don’t know the rules exactly but I feel rocks along roads are fair game. Don’t you think?
I found a great boulder along side Highway 14 south of Madrid on Monday which looks great in my yard. It was a pain to load and unload but worth the effort.
I don’t know if it’s legal or not, but I’m with Mark that it’s just not a good idea to take rocks from along the highway. I hate it when people pull up to the arroyo by my house and just take all the rocks out of it. Eventually it will take it’s toll on the arroyo. The rocks are part of the scenic beauty of the Turquoise Trail.
I don’t know anyone willing to give up some moss rock. In Santa Fe, out on the Old Las Vegas Hwy. by Harry’s Roadhouse restaurant, there are always guys sitting in their trucks selling it. It mostly comes from the Pecos River Valley.
