Sandia Crest - 10,678 feet

Sandia Crest is the "High Point on the Turquoise Trail". The magnificent summit of the Sandia Mountain has an elevation 10,678 feet. The view from the observation deck is awe-inspiring. Information and refreshments are available. Venture into the Sandia Mountain Wilderness to hike through aspen glades and across flowering meadows on a well-marked trail system. From mid November through March three species of Rosy Finch call Sandia Crest home, making the area an ideal destination for bird-watchers. For an exciting ride up or down the mountain to Albuquerque, take the Sandia Peak Tramway, the longest jig-back tram in the world. The wilderness area does not allow overnight camping, but private campgrounds and other lodging is available. The full-service Sandia Peak Ski Area & Chairlift Ride provides access to the mountain and offers year round recreation. Call for information: (505)242-9052. All developed parking sites on Sandia Crest National Scenic Byway require a $3 daily parking fee and $10 for tour buses. Most developed sites have been upgraded for full accessibility for the disabled and some interpretive signing. The Sandia Crest site provides full accessibility to the highest point on the mountain. The Sandia Crest Information Center is open daily May - September.
