The Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve (OMEP) incorporates 1,350 acres in the upper reaches of the Ortiz Mountains, including Placer Peak, the highest peak in the Ortiz range at 8,897 feet (2712 meters). Once a center of mining activity during the New Mexico gold rush in the early mid-nineteenth century, the Preserve contains several historic mine shafts. The Preserve is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Santa Fe off the scenic Turquoise Trail.
OMEP is owned by Santa Fe County and managed by Santa Fe Botanical Garden. A right-of-way agreement with Lac Minerals allows SFBG to cross their property to access the Preserve.
The Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve is a spectacular natural area, a ponderosa and piñon habitat with everything from black bears (Ursus americanus) and coyotes to horned toads, bats, antlions, and over 80 species of birds.
The Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve (OMEP) is fully staffed by trained volunteer docents. Docents are adults of all ages, walks of life and educational backgrounds. The Preserve is accessible only via high-clearance four wheel drive vehicles. People who like to be outdoors are encouraged to join us.
Each year, we offer a Docent Training Program to prepare volunteers to lead nature walks and hikes at OMEP. The docents’ responsibility is to greet visitors in the OMEP parking area and accompany and guide them up the road and into the Preserve.
Our Docent Training Program is a free one-day event with both classroom and on-site presentations. Training includes classes, nature walks and digital presentations all taught by our Teaching Team made up of SFBG senior docents, educators and resource professionals and covers topics including plant life, geology, history, mining and more.
Trainees are required to spend time at OMEP observing activities and interpretive presentations. In order to achieve full docent status, trainees are expected to attend the full day training. Upon successful completion of the training, trainees can begin volunteering as a docent.

Peter Lipscomb, award-winning astrophotographer, operates Astronomy Adventures. New Mexico State Parks ranger by day and stargazer by night, he specializes in outdoor education. In the past, Peter served as director of the Night Sky Program for the New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance. From 2007-2010 he wrote a weekly astronomy column for The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper. His work has also appeared in Sky & Telescope and Astronomy magazines.
Over the years, Peter has worked with Amazon, Anheuser-Busch, Apple, The Bishop’s Lodge, The Commonweal Conservancy, Dow Chemical, Eli Lilly & Company, Encantado Resort, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard, Inn of The Anasazi, KPMG, Microsoft, The National Park Service and Chaco Culture National Historic Park, The National Association of Realtors, New Mexico State Parks, Osram Opto Semiconductor, PriceWaterhouse Coopers, Raymond James, Raytheon Systems, The Santa Fe Conservation Trust, The Santa Fe Convention and Visitors Bureau, Taos Pueblo, and Washington Mutual.
During a tour, Peter engages his guest’s interest by bringing the wonders of the night sky to a level that is more accessible and understood. The clockwork of the sky and what is seen depending upon the time of year is explained. Major constellations are pointed out. Using star lore based upon Greek mythology and other cultures from around the world, star patterns are explored and placed into a memorable context.
Moving from a broad view of the sky, Peter gradually brings the more remote jewels of the night sky within reach. Participants are introduced to close-up views of objects such as galaxies, nebulae and star clusters. The latest scientific findings about each object are shared to help provide a foundation for deeper understanding.

In 1962 the store was purchased by their youngest daughter, Vera, and her husband, Bill Henderson. As demand for a general store in the area declined, Vera and Bill began to trade merchandise for Southwestern Indian crafts. Today with the help of their daughter, Desiri, and her husband Allen, Henderson Store continues to sell high quality Southwestern Indian jewelry, rugs, and pottery at reasonable, competitive prices.

The Tibetan plateau above Lhasa has been grazing land for flocks of highland sheep for many years, contibuting to the sustainability of nomadic herders and historically providing wool for factories in India and Nepal. Today, due to the elevation and geographic position of this site, the People's Republic of China is showing an increased presence, particularly for the placement of nuclear weapons. Is it only a matter of time that designated areas for the security of nuclear weapons will eliminate grazing land for Tibetan highland sheep?

It took Ross Ward over 40 years to carve, collect, and lovingly construct what is now Tinkertown Museum. His miniature wood-carved figures were first part of a traveling exhibit, driven to county fairs and carnivals in the 1960s and '70s. Today over 50,000 glass bottles form rambling walls that surround a 22-room museum. Wagon wheels, old fashioned store fronts, and wacky western memorabilia make Tinkertown's exterior as much as a museum as the wonders within.
Inside, the magic of animation takes over. The inhabitants of a raucous little western town animate to hilarious life. Under the big top, diminutive circus performers challenge tigers and defy gravity while the Fat Lady fans herself and a polar bear teeters and totters.
Throughout, eccentric collections of Americana (wedding cake couples, antique tools, bullet pencils and much, much more) fill Tinkertown's winding hallways. Otto the one-man-band and Esmerelda, the Fortune Teller, need only a quarter to play a tune or predict your future. Through a doorway and across a ramp waits a big-sized surprise: a 35' antique wooden sailboat that braved a 10 year voyage around the world.
Ever a work in progress, Tinkertown is ready to inspire your imagination and awaken your creative spirit. We look forward to seeing you soon!

The Museum of Archaeology & Material Culture
Cedar Crest, NM 87008
(505) 281-2005
The Museum of Archaeology and Material Culture was conceived in 1986 when the present director and founder, Bradley F. Bowman, became aware that many important issues dealing with our past weren't being addressed, by museums, in a way in which the general public could benefit. The past belongs to everyone and an understanding of the past has beneficial implications that, used as a guide in decision-making, could result in a better future for everyone. The Museum became a reality in 1995 when the collections found a home in Cedar Crest, New Mexico, on the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway.
The Museum's permanent exhibits deal with the science of Archaeology and History. A 12,000-year-plus Native American timeline is presented from a synthesized scientific and Native American point of view. A grant from the Federal Department of Transportation made possible a computer-enhanced exhibit housed at the Museum, which explores science conducted at Sandia Cave and turquoise mining in the local area. Other exhibits deal with scientific methodologies employed in archaeology. The Museum offers educational field schools to groups, of any age, and is active in New Mexico cultural resource preservation and archaeological research.

The Friends of Tijeras Pueblo, in partnership with the Forest Service, host a variety of events such as "Saturday Afternoon at Tijeras Pueblo", "Star Nights", and special archaeology, pottery and flint knapping workshops. We are proud of our Junior Archaeologist Program and special tours conducted at the Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological site.
Monthly Lecture Series
You can count on the Friends for a stimulating evening program when you attend one of our monthly lecture/programs. The "Featured Program" is held at 7 pm, the second Tuesday of the month (excepting June, July and August when the lecture series is "on vacation"). We meet in the large conference room at the Sandia Ranger Station in Tijeras. We are told that the topics are always interesting and that the refreshments are great. Lectures are presented without charge, but we do ask that you consider making a donation at the door. All donations go to development and implementation of interactive exhibits and educational programs at the new Interpretive Center. Hope to see you there!
Hibben Center Archiving Crew
The Archiving Crew (volunteers) have worked very hard over the past year. Artifacts from Linda Cordell's 1979 Pottery Mound field school have been completed. The collection has been re-bagged, re-boxed, labeled, written up, computerized and shelved.
Now that Tijeras Pueblo and the 1979 Pottery Mound field school have been completed, the Archiving Crew will continue to work through the materials excavated by Dr. Frank Hibben. About 300 boxes have been completed and taccording to Dave Phillips, another 300 have yet to be done. The big push will be to finish archiving the Hibben Pottery Mound material.
To arrange an interesting and educational visit to the archaeological site for your classroom, club or other organization, for inquiries or additional information, just email us at: info@friendsoftijeraspueblo.org
