We are a freeform, non-commercial, volunteer-run, listener-supported, Low Power FM, community radio station broadcasting from Madrid, New Mexico, USA. In an historic opportunity for grassroots media, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced in 2013 that it temporarily would open an application-filing window for non-commercial Low Power FM community radio station licenses. Chosen applicants across the country were awarded licenses to construct new radio stations and occupy previously available frequencies along the FM dial. The Madrid Cultural Projects 501(c)(3) was awarded our very own LPFM license in February, 2014. Madrid Community Radio, KMRD 96.9 took its first breath after months with our fingers crossed. Our first ON AIR broadcast was at high noon on June 16, 2015. In late winter 2015, KMRD launched our web stream, sharing our live radio broadcast with the world. In fall of 2016, we launched a project to restore the old wood shop from Madrid’s mining days to become the station’s new home. We moved into our new studio in the summer of 2017, broadcasting from the new building in time for our second birthday.
KMRD is now operated by an independent non-profit organization, with 501(c)(3) status. Just as our community raised the funds to build the station and get KMRD on the air, we continue to be supported by our listeners and local sponsors.

We give 1 hour trail rides, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 9-11-2, April through October. Come ride one of the last family owned ranches in the Hagon quadrange, the X-Milliron Ranch. The ride through our ranch will be very enjoyable, and has a low impact on the land. The trial guide will take riders on the trail, that has been worn by the horses, and other wild life, like the Mule Deer. Then over a bluff where you will be able to look out towards a meadow. At this point the ride will gently descend down into a beautiful treed area, and back to headquarters where you can rest and get something to drink or shop in our little store.

Rancho Gallina Inn and Eco-retreat
Rancho Gallina is Santa Fe's newest historic inn, located just off the Turquoise Trail on Bonanza Creek Rd. Wake up to clear country air, soak in our hand-built cedar hot tub, take a walk on the grounds or down Arroyo Gallina (from which we take our name), or start your day with world-class cycling right out the front door.
The ranch combines the rustic charm of classic New Mexico architecture with modern luxury. Features include:
• Beamed ceilings, romantic Kiva fireplaces, private baths, private and shared portals and courtyards
• Luxurious down bedding and high quality linens
• Kitchens/kitchenettes with French press coffee
• Cedar soaking hot tub, fire pits, courtyard fountain, double hammock, bocce ball on the grounds
• Beginning summer 2014: farm-fresh breakfasts from our classic French trained chef/owners, including eggs & produce from the ranch and made-to-order espresso drinks
• Wifi throughout, but we encourage you to unplug, unwind and relax
Your innkeepers have overseen the ranch’s historic preservation and 21st century environmental upgrades. The facility is now 100% solar-powered, with both high- and low-tech water and energy conservation, from geothermal heating/cooling to composting and xeriscaping.
We are minutes from state parks and historic mining towns, including the art communities of Galisteo and Madrid and both the Bonanza Creek and Eaves movie ranches. Santa Fe's dining, galleries and museums are less than half an hour away, and both downhill and cross-country ski destinations are within 45 minutes.

In the past, Peter served as director of the Night Sky Program for the New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance. From 2007-2010 he wrote a weekly astronomy column for The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper. His work has also appeared in Sky & Telescope and Astronomy magazines.
Over the years, Peter has worked with Amazon, Anheuser-Busch, Apple, The Bishop’s Lodge, The Commonweal Conservancy, Dow Chemical, Eli Lilly & Company, Encantado Resort, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard, Inn of The Anasazi, KPMG, Microsoft, The National Park Service and Chaco Culture National Historic Park, The National Association of Realtors, New Mexico State Parks, Osram Opto Semiconductor, PriceWaterhouse Coopers, Raymond James, Raytheon Systems, The Santa Fe Conservation Trust, The Santa Fe Convention and Visitors Bureau, Taos Pueblo, and Washington Mutual.
During a tour, Peter engages his guest’s interest by bringing the wonders of the night sky to a level that is more accessible and understood. The clockwork of the sky and what is seen depending upon the time of year is explained. Major constellations are pointed out. Using star lore based upon Greek mythology and other cultures from around the world, star patterns are explored and placed into a memorable context.
Moving from a broad view of the sky, Peter gradually brings the more remote jewels of the night sky within reach. Participants are introduced to close-up views of objects such as galaxies, nebulae and star clusters. The latest scientific findings about each object are shared to help provide a foundation for deeper understanding.

In 1962 the store was purchased by their youngest daughter, Vera, and her husband, Bill Henderson. As demand for a general store in the area declined, Vera and Bill began to trade merchandise for Southwestern Indian crafts. Today with the help of their daughter, Desiri, and her husband Allen, Henderson Store continues to sell high quality Southwestern Indian jewelry, rugs, and pottery at reasonable, competitive prices.

Tinkertown Museum

It took Ross Ward over 40 years to carve, collect, and lovingly construct what is now Tinkertown Museum. His miniature wood-carved figures were first part of a traveling exhibit, driven to county fairs and carnivals in the 1960s and '70s. Today over 50,000 glass bottles form rambling walls that surround a 22-room museum. Wagon wheels, old fashioned store fronts, and wacky western memorabilia make Tinkertown's exterior as much as a museum as the wonders within.
Inside, the magic of animation takes over. The inhabitants of a raucous little western town animate to hilarious life. Under the big top, diminutive circus performers challenge tigers and defy gravity while the Fat Lady fans herself and a polar bear teeters and totters.
Throughout, eccentric collections of Americana (wedding cake couples, antique tools, bullet pencils and much, much more) fill Tinkertown's winding hallways. Otto the one-man-band and Esmerelda, the Fortune Teller, need only a quarter to play a tune or predict your future. Through a doorway and across a ramp waits a big-sized surprise: a 35' antique wooden sailboat that braved a 10 year voyage around the world.
Ever a work in progress, Tinkertown is ready to inspire your imagination and awaken your creative spirit. We look forward to seeing you soon! Open daily 9-6, April to November 1st. Last ticket sold at 5:30 pm.

The Friends of Tijeras Pueblo, in partnership with the Forest Service, host a variety of events such as "Saturday Afternoon at Tijeras Pueblo", "Star Nights", and special archaeology, pottery and flint knapping workshops. We are proud of our Junior Archaeologist Program and special tours conducted at the Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological site.
Monthly Lecture Series
You can count on the Friends for a stimulating evening program when you attend one of our monthly lecture/programs. The "Featured Program" is held at 7 pm, the second Tuesday of the month (excepting June, July and August when the lecture series is "on vacation"). We meet in the large conference room at the Sandia Ranger Station in Tijeras. We are told that the topics are always interesting and that the refreshments are great. Lectures are presented without charge, but we do ask that you consider making a donation at the door. All donations go to development and implementation of interactive exhibits and educational programs at the new Interpretive Center. Hope to see you there!
Hibben Center Archiving Crew
The Archiving Crew (volunteers) have worked very hard over the past year. Artifacts from Linda Cordell's 1979 Pottery Mound field school have been completed. The collection has been re-bagged, re-boxed, labeled, written up, computerized and shelved.
Now that Tijeras Pueblo and the 1979 Pottery Mound field school have been completed, the Archiving Crew will continue to work through the materials excavated by Dr. Frank Hibben. About 300 boxes have been completed and taccording to Dave Phillips, another 300 have yet to be done. The big push will be to finish archiving the Hibben Pottery Mound material.
To arrange an interesting and educational visit to the archaeological site for your classroom, club or other organization, for inquiries or additional information, just email us at: info@friendsoftijeraspueblo.org
