The Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway is historically
significant in its mining past.
Madrid has mined both anthracite and bituminous coal and here
were two major
gold strikes over a century ago nearby. Cerrillos is famous for
its ancient turquoise mines.
Each town has tried to preserve its character to reflect its historic
past. The Cibola National Forest
has preserved the work done by the Civilian Conservation Corps
in the 1930's
in building the road to the top of Sandia Crest.
